*Me reading The Berenstain Bears' Dinosaur Dig story for the 3rd time consecutive time during bedtime on Tuesday evening*
“Mommy can we please go and see Dinosaurs this weekend”
“We can’t go see real Dinosaurs…they are not here”
“Not even in the Zoo?”
“No”
“But, why?”
“Well they are not on Earth anymore, you can’t find them anywhere”
“But, why?”
“Because they do not exist”
“So are Dinosaurs someone’s imagination?”
“No they did exist, they are just not here anymore”
“But, why?”
“Umm… long long time ago they were on Earth and then this big rock called an Asteroid landed on the Earth and that in a way hurt the Dinosaurs so they are not here”
“So they all got an ouchy?”
“Well, sort of”
“But then they would have got better right? so where are they?”
“…they just died”
“what does that mean?”
“well, so you know, sometimes somethings, some people, some pets, they just go and they don’t come back. …that is death”
“They don’t come back….But, why?”
*A day later on the drive home*
“Hey, are you seeing the beautiful fall colors outside? Look at all those beautiful leaves”
“Why are the colors changing, mommy?”
“Well, these leaves are getting old, the amount of green in them keeps reducing, till a point comes when they will fall off the trees”
“So the leaves become…. dead”
“Umm sort of…”
“But I like leaves I want the tress to have leaves”
“Oh ya, don’t worry they will come back next spring”
“They will come back?”
“Yes, sweetheart I promise”
“I am so excited for spring…”
“Excited to see the leaves again”
“No, to see Dinosaurs. They too will be back in the spring? They will, right mommy?”

It is not lost on me the immense privilege I have, my daughter has, that we can have this conversation in the back drop of what has been happening in the world in the last two weeks.
As I write this I know there are 100s of children, some maybe even younger than my child, for whom death and loss is no longer an abstract concept.
As I sit in the comfort of my home miles away and read about violence and destruction, it is those children that I think about.
Children whose childhood suddenly ended and is now replaced by an existence marred by fear, loss, and uncertainty. The innocence that should define their formative years has been ruthlessly stripped away, replaced by the grim understanding of the fragility of life.
My heart is so heavy.
🤓 Open tabs…
(I have modeled this section after those “open tabs” that we all have with a few (okay 30-40) interesting links that we promise we will eventually get to one day. These are the links that I had open for sometime that I finally got to …)
⭐ Shop class as Soulcraft
”On both economic and psychological grounds, Matthew B. Crawford questions the educational imperative of turning everyone into a “knowledge worker,” based on a misguided separation of thinking from doing. Using his own experience as an electrician and mechanic, Crawford presents a wonderfully articulated call for self-reliance and a moving reflection on how we can live concretely in an ever more abstract world!”

⭐Data is Killing Our Intuition
I have seen great ideas get shut down due to the lack of data, and bad ideas get adopted due to faulty data. After all of this time and effort, I have concluded that data is killing our intuition. It’s affecting us all. We won’t enjoy a movie unless a score tells us we should. We don’t know what “good” sleep is unless we can track it and get a high rating. We can’t even choose a restaurant unless we read enough reviews. Our quest for data-backed ideas has displaced our ability to use our intuition.
📖 My private thoughts from my very public diary…

Have you (or someone you know) taken maternity leave in Canada in the last 7 years?
The good folks at Maturn launched a National Research Study looking at the experiences, opinions, and insights on what women face during maternity leave in Canada. Responses will be kept anonymous, and the information gathered will be used solely for the purpose of research. Click here to take the survey.
I would love to hear from you, feedback is always welcome!
